Sports Medicine

The Sports Medicine Team at Sacramento State will function to provide quality health care to the intercollegiate student-athletes. This shall be done through the following domains: risk management and injury prevention, pathology of injuries and illnesses, assessment and evaluation, acute care of injury and illness, pharmacology, therapeutic modalities, therapeutic exercise, general medical conditions and disabilities, nutritional aspects of injury and illness, psychosocial intervention and referral, health care administration, professional development and responsibilities, from the entire sports medicine staff.

Additional responsibilities of the program will include serving as Approved Clinical Instructors in the Athletic Training Education Program at Sacramento State. Lastly, the program will also function to promote the profession of athletic training as well as the education program to the greater Sacramento community.

We intend to fulfill our purpose by:

• Creating a comfortable caring environment within the athletic training facility.
• Providing care for student-athletes regardless of ability, race, color, sex, age, religion, national origin or sport.

• Assuring that each physician, staff member and student athletic trainer maintains a pleasant, caring, and professional attitude consistent with the National Athletic Trainers Association Code of Professional Practice.

• Maintaining and operating our athletic training facility in an organized and efficient manner.

• Assuring that our emergency procedures are safe, efficient, and expedient.

• Assuring that each athlete is carefully counseled regarding their injury or illness and options are explained when appropriate.

• Philosophically providing all athletes with the opportunity to see a physician if he or she makes this request to a certified staff member.

• Insuring that student athletic trainers are properly trained and knowledgeable regarding basic care and treatment of injuries.

• Insuring that each athlete has the best possible opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in a physically healthy environment. Assuring that our emergency procedures are safe, efficient and expedient.

• Providing essential care within the limits of the budget allocated by the University.

The underlying philosophy for this program, is that, the medical needs of the student athlete shall always be the first consideration for all members of our staff.

We are committed to ongoing evaluation of our athletic training program so our student athletes can be assured of the highest quality in sports medicine care. Furthermore, we are committed to addressing problems and concerns in a timely manner so the needs of our athletes and staff can continue to be met.
