MORETTO REACHES MILESTONE, HEARD WITH TWO HITS AS BASEBALL FALLS TO LANCERS SATURDAY

SACRAMENTO -- Senior Steven Moretto became the 14th player in program history to reach 200 career hits with a ninth inning single while teammate Jeffery Heard finished 2-for-4 to collect his 12th multi-hit game of the year, but host Sacramento State could not dig itself out of an early hole on Saturday afternoon, falling to California Baptist by a 6-2 score in game two of their Western Athletic Conference series at John Smith Field.

The Hornets fell to 22-20 overall and 12-11 in conference play, while the Lancers improved to 26-13 overall and 12-8 in league. The two teams will play the rubber match in the series on Sunday (May 1) with first pitch scheduled for Noon.

Entering the day sitting on 199 career hits, Moretto came up in the ninth looking for the milestone and delivered a lead-off single into left field on an 0-1 offering to join 13 other Sacramento State greats in the exclusive club. Heard, meanwhile, collected singles in the second and seventh innings to stand behind only teammates Cesar Valero and Jorge Bojorquez for the team lead in multi-hit games this year.

A Mitchel Simon home run in the second staked the Lancers to the early lead and the visitors tacked on two more in the third thanks to a sac fly and an RBI single for the 3-0 lead. California Baptist made it a 6-0 game in the seventh thanks to three straight run-scoring hits before the Hornets were able to break up the shutout in the eighth with some help from the Lancer defense.

Dylan McPhillips singled to lead-off the frame and moved to second on a wild pitch before Trevor Doyle walked to put a pair on. Both moved up 90 feet on a passed ball with one out before a grounder by Jorge Bojorquez was misplayed by the CBU third baseman, bounding far enough away to score both runners and make it 6-2.

Sacramento State attempted another rally in the ninth sparked by Moretto's milestone knock as Martin Vincelli-Simard added a one-out single to put a pair on base, but a lineout and a solid throw down to second by the Lancer catcher eliminated a Hornet trying to advance on a pitch in the dirt to end the game.

C.J. Culpepper (4-2) earned the win for CBU, allowing just two hits and striking out seven over six shutout innings before giving way to the bullpen in the seventh. Noah Takacs (1-3) suffered the loss for Sacramento State, charged with three runs on three hits while striking out five over five innings.
