MEN’S TENNIS FALLS ON THE ROAD TO WEBER STATE, 4-3, IN SEASON FINALE

OGDEN, Utah -- Despite winning the doubles point, and getting singles victories from Jan Silva and Rudolfs Aksenoks, Sacramento State's season came to an end today with a 4-3 road loss at Weber State.

The Hornets, who were eliminated from Big Sky Tournament contention yesterday with a loss at Idaho State, finish the season 3-12 overall and 0-3 in the Big Sky. The Hornets dealt with numerous injuries all season long, and saw eight of their 15 matches end in 4-3 scores.

The Hornets' final record was misleading as the team played numerous close matches, and was shut out just once all season (a 4-0 loss to Cal Poly). In addition, Sacramento State used four freshmen in the singles lineup in nearly every match.

Weber State improved to 5-9 overall record and 1-2 in league play.

Different from seasons past, this year's Big Sky Tournament consists of just four teams, two from the North Division and two from the South Division. In previous seasons, six teams qualified for the two-day postseason event.

In today's match, the Hornets started things well as the combinations of Mark Keki/Liam Liles (6-2 at No. 1) and Silva/Michael Vizcarra (6-3 at No. 2) were both victorious to give the Hornets the doubles point.

Weber State then picked up straight set singles victories over Hermont Legaspi (No. 2) and Michael Vizcarra (No. 3) to take a 2-1 lead. Silva (6-4, 6-3 at No. 5) and Aksenoks (7-6, 6-3 at No. 6) posted back-to-back wins to put the Hornets back on top, 3-2.

However, the Wildcats won the final two singles matches in three sets, which included Keki falling at No. 1 by a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 score, and Liles losing at No. 4 by a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 score. The loss for Keki snapped an eight-match winning streak, and the true freshman finished the year with a 9-4 record. Silva, also a true freshman, finished the season 7-7 in singles play and 2-1 vs. conference competition.

Today marked the final matches in the careers of Sacramento State seniors Legaspi and Vizcarra. Legaspi's 42 career singles wins are 10th most in Sacramento State's Div. I era (1992-pres.).
