BERTUCCIO SHUTOUT AND DAY BLAST LEAD SOFTBALL TO 1-0 WIN AND 3-GAME SWEEP OF MONTANA

SACRAMENTO -- Marissa Bertuccio threw a one-hit shutout and Lewa Day homered to lead Sacramento State to a 1-0 victory over Montana on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The win allowed the Hornets to complete a three-game sweep of the Grizzlies, which included a doubleheader yesterday.

The wins improved the Hornets to 25-20 overall and 9-3 in the Big Sky Conference. Sacramento State remains 1.5 games back of first-place Weber State (10-1), who also won today. That sets up a huge three-game showdown between the Big Sky's top two teams next week (April 29-30) in Ogden, Utah. Sacramento State has just six games remaining on the regular season schedule.

Bertuccio was masterful yet again, as the junior improved to 17-7 this season. She allowed just one hit with one walk and five strikeouts while throwing 88 pitches. The shutout was her seventh of the season and she lowered her ERA to 1.97. Montana did not have a hit in today's game until a leadoff single in the sixth.

Sacramento State pitching was dominant in the series as Montana scored just two runs over 20 innings. Bertuccio was a big part of that effort, finishing the series 2-0 with a 0.54 ERA and 12 strikeouts against the Grizzlies.

Montana starter Dana Butterfield and reliever Allie Brock were also impressive today, combining to allow the Hornets just three hits and a run. However, one of those hits was a two-out home run to center field by Day, a majestic shot that sailed well over the high center field fence. The home run was Day's 12th of the season, and was all the run support Bertuccio would need.

Day finished the afternoon with a pair of hits while Alondra Mejia had the Hornets' other knock.

Next week's three-game series between the Hornets and Weber State in Ogden will begin on Friday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. PT, and conclude on Saturday with a game at 11 a.m. PT.
